October 4, 2011 - Joel Jens Claims Prestigous Triple Crown Award In WKA Manufacturer's Competition
Manitowoc Wisconsin’s Tony Kart driver Joel Jen’s went into the final round of the World Karting Associations Manufacturer’s Cup
with 3 things on his mind. These being three National Championships that could be clinched at the New Castle Motorsports Park located east of
Indianapolis Indiana. He was up to the challenge and overcame the obstacles along the way to be named champion in Komet Junior Light and Heavy as well
as Yamaha Junior Heavy at the weekends end.
Going into the last race of the series sponsored by Bridgestone and driven by Mazda, Joel knew
that wins for the weekend were not the most important objective. After extensive testing and preparation before the event the Joel Jens Racing Team
knew that they had all the resources to bring home the results they wanted.
Saturday’s Qualifying in Komet Heavy placed Joel in 22nd,
not the usual expected results from the current point leader in the class. But the team along with engine builder, Kevin Nelson from Switch Racing
engines, went to work and found the problem and Joel drove a calculated race during the Pre Final and Final to advance to 5th and a podium finish and
enough to secure the National Championship in the SCS Racing Komet Junior Heavy Class. The second class of the day would see Joel Jens claim his
first Streeter SuperStands pole position in Manufacturers Cup Junior completion for the KartSport North America Yamaha Junior Light class.
At
the end of the day Joel would say” I am very happy with my finish in the Komet class and the 1st National Championship of my karting career. I
could not have done it without the help of Vic and Jason Matuszewski keeping my Komet running excellent all year long. I am looking forward to
tomorrow and concentrating on the task at hand, bringing home 2 more titles. “
Sunday’s racing action would see Team Joel Jens
Racing compete in the Beasley Motorsports Komet Light class. Going into the day leading the national points, Joel looked to race smart with the
results in order to lock up the 2nd Championship of the weekend. Qualifying 12th and progressing up thru the day and into a podium position going into
the last couple of laps had Joel looking good. Unfortunately a bolt loosened up and allowed the bumper to dislodge and jeopardize the chances of the
title. What was heartbreaking at the time would turn out to be alright as Joel’s closest competitor would not gather a finish high enough to
offset his worst finish for the year. Just goes to show that consistency, dedication and results would insure the 2nd National Championship for the
year.
Next up for Sunday was the Yamaha Junior Heavy class, the last class of the day and Joel’s last chance to secure the coveted Triple
Crown Award presented by WKA. Tired of just being in position for the Championships, Joel and his tuner, Tiffin Willareth, made a decision to end the
year with an exclamation point. After grabbing his 2nd pole of the year and sweeping the poles for the Yamaha classes, Joel was living up to his title
of WKA hottest junior driver as quoted by WKA. Racing hard in the Pre-Final with friend Austin Self, and engine teammate Mike McAndrews, the three
made a deal to work together to break away from the pack and run for the Final win. At the line Joel defeated his fellow Switch engine driver by .018
seconds and making it a clean sweep for the day in Yamaha, and the induction into the coveted Triple Crown Club. This is a feat that very few ever
accomplish.
“On the grid Tiffin leaned in to me and said it’s been a great weekend, an awesome year, but let’s go out there
and make it EVEN better!” Joel commented. “This gave me the inspiration to make it the best race of the weekend and season for me”
“I didn’t know that it was for the Triple Crown, as he had not had the chance to really figure the points tabulations yet. I gave it my
all as everyone with me had given their all the entire season. I am so happy with the Tony Kart product, has it has been such a dream to drive since I
got on them I’m looking forward to the SKUSA SuperNats 15”
Jens finished the year with some impressive results in the
Manufacturer’s Cup Series: Out of 20 races he had 16 top 10’s, 12 top 5’s, 2 Poles, 5 Pre Final wins and 6 overall class wins. All
contributed to the 3 National Championships.
Jens recognizes that there are many who contributed to his success for the year and would like to
thank them for their dedication and support to his racing: Switch Racing Engines, Kevin Nelson, Jason and Vic Matuszewski, Verde Speed Resources,
Tiffin Willareth, GO Designs, Tony Kart, OTK USA, L & T Clutches, Bank First National, TA Motorsports, WOMT Radio, Greenstone Farm Credit Services,
